Generation Game

What should a fan do when his football club is besmirched by a child abuse scandal?  Remain loyal, or sever a family connection spanning three generations?

Charlie Morris’ moving and witty story tackles this tortuous dilemma while examining his family’s obsession with Crewe Alexandra throughout most of its history.  Much more than a conventional fan memoir, it explores the very roots of football fanaticism. He relates how the game helped his grandfather through the horrors of First World War battlefields, his own reliance on it as an escape from life’s heartbreaks, and chronicles Crewe’s miraculous transformation under manager Dario Gradi.

But from success with stars such as David Platt, Neil Lennon, Robbie Savage and Danny Murphy, dark secrets emerge,
leaving the author with an agonising decision to take…

AUTHOR & FREELANCE JOURNALIST

Charlie Morris

Formerly the sports editor at the Financial Times, Charlie has managed to combine his two great passions of writing and sport through a long career in journalism.

Football has dominated his life from a very early age.  A passion passed down through the generations, Crewe Alexandra is in his blood.

His first book, Generation Game, was published in spring 2019.

"A very moving and captivating read.  They say the sign of a good book is if you don't want to put it down - and I devoured it in one sitting."

DANIEL TAYLOR
The Guardian

"A touching and intriguing football fan memoir. Inspired by a new love, and horrified by a child abuse scandal at his club, Morris plunges back through the history of his family and its town to understand 100 years of pain, loss and devotion."

DAVID WINNER
Author of Brilliant Orange and Those Feet

"At times painfully honest, including about Crewe's child-abuse scandal, Morris admits to using football to hide from bereavement and sorrow much as did his grandfather, damaged by the first world war. This book is as much about male English emotional repression as about football."
